Florida
has some of the best beaches in the US, with many
receiving national recognition by the varies grading organizations.
The illustrious Dr Beach best beaches list for 2005 had
three Florida beaches in its top ten including the number
one, North Beach St Petersburg.
There
are many miles of beaches to be discovered on both the
Atlantic and Gulf coasts, although there are differences
between the two. The Gulf coast beaches tend to have very
fine picturesque white sand, while the sand on the
Atlantic beaches is much coarser and darker. The water is
generally a little warmer on the Gulf coast at between 55
and 85 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the time of year,
although anyone looking for waves should head to the
Atlantic coast.
From
Orlando the closest beach is Cocoa beach on the Atlantic
coast, which can be reached in around 45 minutes. Cocoa
beach is six miles long and is a popular tourist
destination in the summer resulting in it bustling with activity.
|
|
|
|
Also
on the Atlantic coast and just under an hours drive from
Orlando is Daytona beach. Stretching for over 23 miles,
the golden sands are compact enough to drive your car
onto. As with Cocoa beach, Daytona is a very popular area
with lots to see and do but again it can get very busy.
Two
quieter beaches to be found on the Atlantic coast are
Melbourne beach and East Smyrna beach. Both can be reached
in about 1 hour 15 minutes. Melbourne beach is very similar
to Daytona although it is much quieter, and the East
Smyrna beach tends to be visited by locals rather than
tourists.

|
The
beaches on the Gulf coast are as good as anywhere in the
world. The award winning beaches at St Petersburg and
Clearwater (number one and number four respectively
in the Dr Beach best beaches list for 2005) will take two
hours to reach from Orlando, while within a further two
hours drive down the Gulf coast you'll find the equally
attractive areas of Fort Myers, Naples and Marco Island
amongst many others.
A
little further a field is the south coast of Florida which
is also home to numerous beaches including the south beach
at Miami. At just under 4.5 hours away it is closer than
you think and is a hotspot for celebrities. Further a
field still is Key West, which offers some of the best snorkeling
in the world, you may even spot a pod of wild dolphins
swimming by. |
